Mosquitos — A Nuisance and a Health Hazard

Many of the insects that Mares Exterminating handles are merely nuisances. You don't want them in your home, and you might not want them around your patio or picnic, but they're not generally dangerous.

Mosquitos are another story. Mosquitos can carry a variety of illnesses that are dangerous or fatal to humans, including malaria, the West Nile virus, and Eastern equine encephalitis. For that reason, it's important to have our experienced technicians make your home a mosquito-free zone.

We offer two ways to protect your family from mosquitos

  • One-Time Treatment — This option is ideal for a special occasion, such as a BBQ, garden party, or holiday gathering.
  • Mosquito Control Plan — Our monthly Mosquito Control Plan protects your yard all season long.

Protecting Your Yard From Mosquitos

Professional solutions from Mares Exterminating are an effective way to keep mosquitos from disrupting your enjoyment of your yard. There are also several steps that you can take to make your property less attractive to them in the first place.

Mosquitos require an aquatic habitat in which to lay their eggs and develop through their larval and pupae forms. By removing standing water, you'll deprive them of the environment they want most.

  1. Don't overwater your yard or garden.
  2. Empty and clean birdbaths at least once a week. Replace the water with fresh water.
  3. Dump standing water out of potted plant saucers.
  4. Change your pet dish water frequently (at least weekly). Your pets will appreciate it, too!
  5. Change water in fountains and kiddie pools at least weekly. Flip unused kiddie pools upside down.
  6. Be sure your trash can lids are on the cans properly and not upside down.
  7. Clean your gutters regularly and make sure they flow freely and drain completely.
  8. Fill in low and muddy areas in your lawn that tend to accumulate water.
  9. Grade your yard to ensure that water flows away from your house and does not form pools.
  10. Make sure tree stumps and holes are not gathering water.
  11. If you have a tire swing or old tires in your yard, make sure they are not holding water.
  12. Barrels used to collect rainwater should be covered with screens to prevent mosquitos from laying their eggs in them.
  13. Check trash and recycling containers to be sure they cannot accumulate water.
  14. If you have decorative lakes or fish ponds, add bubblers or fountains that ripple the water and drown any mosquito larvae that are present.
  15. Keep swimming pools properly treated during the summer. Make sure they are drained or covered during the off-months.
