Similar Insects With Very Different Solutions

Bees and wasps are technically quite different insects, but they're closely related. Both are in the order Hymenoptera, and they both have the potential to sting.

Many people are allergic to their stings, so it's best to leave their removal to the professionals from Mares Exterminating. We use proven solutions, state-of-the-art techniques, and over 20 years of experience to handle them safely. Call us today for your free consultation.

Our Friends, the Bees

Most of the bees in the Poquoson area are honey bees or bumblebees. Bumble bees and ground bees normally nest in the ground or the hollow of a tree, and honey bees build their famous hives.

Bees play an essential role in the ecosystem by pollinating flowers, but they still have the potential to sting. In some individuals, the reaction is potentially fatal. For that reason, it's a good idea to have us take care of them if they've nested near your home, business, or other area where people gather and play.

Honey bees can be relocated and placed in the care of a local beekeeper, who will use them to pollinate the flowers we love to look at and the crops we love to eat and to make the honey that's so delicious on toast.

Our Unpleasant Neighbors, the Wasps

Wasps are typically less welcome than bees, especially around humans. They play a part in ecology by serving as food for many of our favorite birds, and some species eat other insects, but overall, wasps are aggressive insects that are easily disturbed and prone to sting.

Wasps are either social (living in groups) or solitary (living alone). Solitary wasps build simple, single-celled nests. Social wasps are more problematic because they build paper pulp nests on trees, underground, in an attic, or under an eave where they have shelter and easy access to the outdoors.

The most common wasp in our area is the mud dauber, so called because it builds a tube-like nest out of mud. Mud dauber nests can be located on the outside of just about any structure.
