Known for transmitting Rocky Mountain spotted fever and tularemia, they are most active during the spring and early fall months.
The Gulf Coast Tick is another species commonly found in this region. It resembles the American Dog Tick but has silvery-white markings. These ticks are typically found in grasslands and coastal areas, including salt marshes. They are known to transmit Rickettsia parkeri rickettsiosis, a form of spotted fever, and are most active during the warmer months.
To reduce the risk of tick encounters, homeowners should implement preventive measures. Landscaping plays a key role, as keeping grass trimmed and removing leaf litter helps eliminate tick habitats. Personal protection is also essential, with tick repellents containing DEET and permethrin-treated clothing providing effective barriers. Pet owners should regularly check their animals for ticks and use veterinarian-recommended tick prevention treatments to safeguard against infestations.
