Millipedes
Latin Name: Diplopoda
What Do Millipedes Look Like?
Millipedes are long, cylindrical creatures that can range from less than an inch to several inches in length, depending on the species. They are often black, brown, or reddish in color and have a segmented body. Each body segment contains two pairs of legs, which gives millipedes their characteristic many-legged appearance—though not all species have exactly 1,000 legs as their name suggests. Their legs move in a wave-like motion as they crawl, making them easy to identify.
Where Do Millipedes Live?
Millipedes are commonly found outdoors in moist environments such as under rocks, logs, mulch, or leaf litter. They thrive in damp areas where they feed on decaying organic matter, such as dead leaves and plant material. While they play an essential role in breaking down organic material in their natural environment, they sometimes wander into homes in search of shelter.
How Do Millipedes Enter Homes?
Millipedes invade homes seeking shelter when outdoor conditions are unfavorable, such as during heavy rains or droughts. They enter through cracks in foundations, gaps around windows or doors, or openings near utility pipes. Indoors, they prefer damp areas like basements, bathrooms, and crawl spaces.
Are Millipedes Harmful?
While not harmful, millipedes can be a nuisance. They do not bite or sting but may emit a mild odor or secrete a fluid that can irritate sensitive skin when threatened.
